The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try, and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Jules Verne. When we think of Jules Verne we think of science fiction and wonderful exploits full of adventure way beyond their time. So we are delighted here to bring you some of Verne’s shorter works that will take you on a voyage of new discoveries into the astonishing mind that wrote Around the World in 80 Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Born in Nantes, France, in 1828, his family planned for him to become a lawyer, but his mind was set on becoming a writer. By the time of his death in 1905 he was famed the world over as perhaps the greatest writer of science fiction, a regard in which he is still held today. Among the readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe. Includes:´A Voyage in a Balloon´´The Fortieth French Ascent of Mont Blanc´´Master Zacharius´ 1. Language: English. Narrator: Richard Mitchley. An unexpected love story… Jules Strauss is a Princeton senior with a full scholarship, acquaintances instead of friends, and a family she´s ashamed to invite to Parents´ Weekend. With the income she´ll receive from donating her ´´pedigree´´ eggs, she believes she can save her father from addiction. Annie Barrow married her high school sweetheart and became the mother to two boys. After years of staying at home and struggling to support four people on her husband´s salary, she thinks she´s found a way to recover a sense of purpose and bring in some extra cash. India Bishop, thirty-eight (really forty-three), has changed everything about herself: her name, her face, her past. In New York City, she falls for a wealthy older man, Marcus Croft, and decides a baby will ensure a happy ending. When her attempts at pregnancy fail, she turns to technology, and Annie and Jules, to help make her dreams come true. But each of their plans is thrown into disarray when Marcus´ daughter Bettina, intent on protecting her father, becomes convinced that his new wife is not what she seems.… With startling tenderness and laugh-out-loud humor, Jennifer Weiner once again takes readers into the heart of women´s lives in an unforgettable, timely tale that interweaves themes of class and entitlement, surrogacy and donorship, the rights of a parent and the measure of motherhood. 1. Robert Gleason brings his A game to The Evil That Men Do, a terrorism thriller audiobook steeped with equal parts terror and wit. Income inequality and the offshore hoarding of illicit black funds have reached such extremes that the earth’s democracies are in peril. The oligarchs are taking over. The people worldwide, however, are rising up, and they demand that the UN seize and redistribute all that illegal filthy lucre. But it will not be easy. The world’s oligarchs will not go gentle. Mikhail Putilov, Russia’s strongman; J. T. Tower, the American president; and Wahid al-Waheed, the Saudi ambassador to the United States will do anything to stop and destroy this global expropriation moment - even if it means nuking the UN. Only three people can stop them: the crusading, muckraking, investigative journalist Jules Meredith; ex-CIA agent Elena Moreno; and her boyfriend, the ex-Special Forces operative turned cybersecurity billionaire John C. Jameson. If these three fail, democracies around the world will die, and the age of the great global oligarchs will begin. If these the three friends fail, the nuclear fireballs will blaze, the UN will burn, and a new dark ages will ensue. People everywhere must hold their breath and wait. 1. Language: English. The Invisible Man is a favorite science-fiction novel by H. G. Wells. The Invisible Man of the title is Griffin, a scientist who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body´s refractive index to that of air so that it neither absorbs nor reflects light and thus becomes invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but fails in his attempt to reverse it. Herbert George Wells (1866-1946), known as H. G. Wells, was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science-fiction novels, and is called the father of science fiction, along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Eric Bruenner. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/081899/bk_acx0_081899_sample.mp3. The 12 steps to developing unstoppable mental toughness in young athletes and high-performance sportspeople. In this audiobook, I take a broad look at what mental toughness means. Because I have lived with adversity for most of my life, I’m often asked: ´´How do you deal with this?´´ This book is my response to that question. Mental toughness is the key to success. I offer my definition of the concept based on my life experiences inside and outside of basketball, and the influences and lessons from my parents, coaches, teachers, teammates, friends, mentors, and colleagues over the years. I have had great fortune to witness real mental toughness in some amazing people I have met and situations I have been in. So, I relate examples and lessons of hard-won toughness I have seen up close and that have had a positive and permanent impact on me. I would like to offer you these stories from my life so you can look further into your own stories. Look into your past, pay attention to your present, and a create bright future. Though my life experiences, I have discovered that all successful people share one trait - psychological resistance. The point is, I fail all the time, but it doesn’t stop me from taking the next challenge. That mindset is critical for me in my career. And it will be critical for you too. You have to be willing to live with what you do, with the life you create for yourself, whatever the result. So never stop trying. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jules Hall-Weakley. The Victorians wrote some of the best and most enduring erotica. For such a tightly-laced age, people spent a lot of time thinking about things carnal. Jules Verne, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells, et al enthralled us with their visions of new possibilities. The rich and slightly decadent visuals of the steam age lend themselves perfectly to the new carnality of post-punk era. And, of course, what is repressed will be even more exciting once the corset is unlaced. Steampunk, even without sex, is erotic; with sex, it´s over-the-top hot. A widowed lady engineer invents a small device that can store the energy from sexual frustration and convert it to electricity to help power a home. Teresa Noelle Roberts shows us what it can do, confronted with sexual fulfillment. What volume of steampunk would be complete without a tale of sailing ships and the men who sail them? If your taste runs to sexy pirates in space, Poe Von Page will delight you with the mutinous crew of the Danika Blue and their new captain. Then there´s the very special room on the top floor in the House of the Sable Locks, a brothel where sexually discriminating men go to have their fantasies fulfilled. Even if a man daren´t put those fantasies into words, Elizabeth Schechter´s ´´Succubus´´ will give the madam all the information she needs with which to make her clients happy. There are brothels, flying machines, steam-powered conveyances, manor houses, spiritualist societies. The following stories afford intelligently written, beautifully crafted glimpses into other worlds, where the Carnal Machines won´t fail to seduce you, get you wet or make you hard so, lie back, relax; a happy ending is guaranteed. 1.
